TO FAST-TRACK INFRA DEV'T
DPWH rolls out 24/7 construction works

In line with efforts to fast-track infrastructure development during the six-year term of President Rodrigo Duterte, Public Works Secretary Mark Villar has rolled out the 24/7 construction of key projects in urban centers nationwide.

"We have a traffic crisis we intend to solve in the next two to three years. The Philippines have had an infrastructure deficit in the last four decades," Villar said in an emailed statement.

Budget and Management Secretary Benjamin Diokno earlier said the 24/7 push was in line with efforts by the Duterte administration to speed up the construction of infrastructure projects and increase budget spending—a major issue during the term of former President Benigno Aquino III.
"There is clamor not only to address the deficiencies, but also to propose an infrastructure program that would eventually ease traffic in our major urban cities," Villar said.

"Infrastructure delayed is infrastructure denied. Mechanisms will soon be in place to ensure that projects are built on-time," he added.
Diokno in July said the government was losing P2.3 billion a day each time an infrastructure project is delayed.

According to the DPWH, four projects in Metro Manila have now been placed under the administration's 24/7 edict—the Mandaluyong Main Drainage Project, the road widening and drainage improvement on Quezon Avenue—east bound and on Mother Ignacia—and the drainage improvement along EDSA from White Plains to Main Avenue.

To hasten the project developments along major thoroughfares such as EDSA, the government plans to a special concrete that dries and settles 24 hours.

Early this month, Villar said he was confident that Metro Manila's gridlock can be solved in two to three years by the sheer political will of Détente.

The DPWH also said major urban centers in the Visayas and Mindanao have started implementing the 24/7 construction works of infrastructure projects.

"Our vision is to make our communities livable and safe through quality projects that are accessible, and on-schedule," Villar said. — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/VDS, GMA News
